Privacy Policy

Last updated: February 9, 2026

The short version: Lector's free tier processes everything locally on your device. We don't collect, store, or transmit your data. Period.

What Data We Collect

Free Tier: None.

When you use Lector's free tier, all text-to-speech processing happens entirely within your browser using the built-in Web Speech API. The text you read never leaves your device.

We store the following locally in your browser (never on our servers):

This data is stored using Chrome's sync storage, which syncs across your devices if you're signed into Chrome. We have no access to it.

Pro Tier (Future)

When we launch Pro tier with premium AI voices, text will be sent to our servers for processing. At that time, we will update this policy with full details about:

We will never sell your data or use it for advertising.

Analytics & Tracking

We don't use any. No Google Analytics, no tracking pixels, no fingerprinting. We have no idea how many people use Lector or what websites they visit.

Third-Party Services

Free Tier: None. Everything runs locally.

Pro Tier (Future): We will use OpenAI or similar providers for voice synthesis. Their privacy policies will apply to the text processed through their APIs.

Permissions We Request

We request minimal permissions. We cannot access your browsing history, passwords, or any data from pages you don't actively ask us to read.

Children's Privacy

Lector does not knowingly collect any personal information from children under 13. Since our free tier collects no personal information from anyone, this is not applicable.

Changes to This Policy

If we make significant changes, we'll update the "Last updated" date and, for major changes, notify users through the extension or our website.
